Problems migrating from SBS 2003 to SBS 2008

Postby boris » December 17th, 2009, 1:56 pm

My migration from sbs23k to sbs28 was running smoothly until I got to the Demote and remove the SBS 2003 part.

Here I get an error message:

------------ --------- ------
Active Directory Installation Wizard
------------ --------- ------
This domain controller is a Global Catalog server. Global Catalogs are used to process user logons. You should make sure other Global Catalogs are accessible to users of this domain before removing Active Directory from this computer.

The box indicating that this domain controller is the last controller for the domain pmtate.local is unchecked. However, no other Active Directory domain controllers for that domain can be contacted.
Do you wish to proceed anyway?
If you click Yes, any Active Directory changes that have been made on this domain controller will be lost.

As everything up to now has been running fine for a week or so the Exchange 2007 server has more mail in it than when we started, so do I really have to start again? How do I save the additional mail if I go back to day 0?

If I remember right you need to point DNS on the SBS 2003 NIC to the SBS 2008 server, then try again.

Hang on ...this warning about the GC is normal.

The clean out/up of the GC role isn't really necessary at this step in the official documents.

But as grestone said, make sure the two boxes are both on and can ping/talk to each other.

I also found that turning off netlogon service manually speeded things up.

No luck...

1. Stopped DNS on SBS23k

2. Added SBS28K to NIC on SBS23k

3. Unticked Global Catalog on SBS23K

4. Checked tick Global Catalog on SBS28K - both can be seen from NTDS settings on each machine.

5. Exchange 2003 has been uninstalled before I started

6. Tried dcpromo and it failed again but GC message obviously gone.

Suddenly Outlook couldn't find Exchange and so following previous note reticked and Outlook worked again.

7. Tried dcpromo again and still fails

Run SBSbpa's on both respective boxes.
