Windows Home Server

Postby boris » October 22nd, 2009, 11:58 am

Not really sure where else to put this...

Windows Home Server was included in MAPS. An article I read suggested that the Home Server was actually quite good and could be used in smaller environments where SBS had too many features.

Anyway to try and test it I decided to to create a Microsoft Virtual PC and install the software. I have not been able to. Does anyone know if this is possible (SBS 2003 can be installed ok)? Any experiences with Home Server for a group of 5 people?

Any help would be welcome, Thanks.

We've run WHS in both Virtual Server and also Hyper-V virtualized environments as well as (obviously) physical environments and it works well in all of these scenarios. I've not tried under Virtual PC, but can't see why it wouldn't work. WHS (the initial one, at least) is an x86 product so there should be no constraints as far as that goes.
but as far as implementing WHS as a solution to small businesses, the answer is an outstanding YES. I bring up WHS with every new client, and they almost always say: Yes, how quickly can we get it? Note: if a customer also has Mac computers, you may want to propose the HP hardware WHS solution (HP Media Smart Server), as it comes with built in Mac support.

We add WHS primarily for its backup ability to backup. In this realm it is really an excellent tool. For the small 5 to 10 user pee networks and for small SBS networks it is the best bang for the buck since it will image the servers as well.

I have set up 2 experimaental boxes, 1 with the Sharepoint and the other acting as NAS/ FTP box and so far so good. Sharepoint really gives it some additional value

For use as a business server I still have reservations and Think SBS(2003) is the best thing going for a business.
